I wrote this in 1994, just before the elections in South Africa that changed everything.  The future of the country was uncertain as the old year ticked into the new.  No one knew whether there would be war or peace.  No one except God.  And He worked a miracle that year, and lines of people wound through the countryside to cast their votes and enter a Rainbow Land.  I have been amazed, as I have used this poem again and again to find how relevant it is at the turn of each year.  Always there are giants – but Always there is God!  May God use this poem to help you to be aware of His presence with you throughout this new year until its close and beyond.

(Numbers 13:25-38)

What does the New Year hold for you?

Are you full of fear and doom

And listening to the ten?

Are the giants too big for you

And the pluses far too few?

Are you listening to the sound of tiny, worldly men?

Or is the voice you hear from God?

A God who triumphs over all,

A God of victory, love and peace

Who overwhelms each giant so tall

And makes each obstacle seem small.

Can you hear the voice of two saying violence will cease?

Can you allow the God you love

To be infinite in His power?

To go beyond your wildest dreams;

To fill this land with endless streams

Of shining light that flows each hour from God in heaven above?

What  does the New Year hold for you?

Mandy, what a wonderfully timeous reminder of a bedrock truth that has been silted over by student protests, strikes at Pikitup and the licensing office, the SAA saga, etc ad nauseam. How great is our God. Thank you for reflecting him into our earth-focussed lives.
