Some time ago I moved into a new home.  I and my housemate did not always see eye to eye, and life could be challenging, probably for both of us, although I never actually asked him to tell me how he felt.  From time to time he made it perfectly clear anyway.  This post, hopefully, will make you laugh at the beginning of the year – never a bad thing to do.  Laughter is, they say, the best medicine, so I hope this little bit of nonsense will light up your day.  God bless you.

Of course it is his house.  He has made that quite clear.  I am here by permission – but I think, he does, secretly enjoy my presence.

Oh he makes a lot of fuss about it.  He does not like the fact that I leave in the morning when it is still dark.  My alarm regularly wakes him and he grumbles at me for disturbing his beauty sleep.  He is not pleased when I get home late either.  He is often waiting outside for me when I arrive, pretending to be cross, but actually enjoying the last rays of the late afternoon sun as he strolls up the road.  Almost before I stop the car he is telling me about his day.  He shows little interest in mine.  He chats on and on, hardly stopping for breath.

I have never quite understood why, as we relax together watching a bit of TV after the day’s chores are over, he has to sit in the middle of the sofa, instead of letting me have half and taking the other half for himself.  But there you are – that is how it is.

At bedtime he mumbles and bumbles around until I ask him to go to bed and to sleep.  Only then will he settle down.

How did I end up with such an obstreperous housemate?  Well, I am not quite sure, but sometimes life happens and here we are, tolerating one another.

Perhaps, though, I can share a secret with you.  In spite of not being too keen on his type in general, I have grown quite fond of this old cat.  And I think, in fact, he is quite fond of me.  On a cold winter’s night he is a snug companion – even if he does take up three quarters of the bed!

I am grateful for his presence in my home – and we rub along quite well together – as long as I remember that it is his house and feed him frequently.  Black and sleek, always demanding but usually happy to see me – this cat – my housemate!
