Senses

This is a poem I wrote when I was feeling down and grey, like the weather. I began to consider my blessings and God led me to think about the senses which He has given as a gift to His creation. May it help you to be aware of your senses in the coming days. God bless you.

Heavenly Father,
The sky today is grey and heavy
With rain clouds threatening
To fall and drench the thirsty earth
With your life-giving gift of rain.
The grass and shrubs look so green
And full of life after the winter’s
Dreary time of dust and shades of brown.
The colours are so lovely.
Yellows, blues and reds and everywhere
The beautiful greens in all their hues.

In the early evening the jasmine
Gives off its heady scent
And the red rose in our garden
Smells so sweet at any time of day.
I always try to stop and smell a bloom
Whenever I pass by, however busy
My life may seem to be.
The smell of rain drifts gently
On the wind - and is that – yes,
It must be the delicious waft of
Frying onions from our neighbour’s home!

I can almost taste that smell
And my imaginings bring memories
Of many sumptuous meals and
Glorious tastes of times shared
With friends and family o’er the years.
Beef on the spit in an England street;
Turkey in the heat of a South African sun;
And also as a child in rooms warmed
By a roaring fire - our wedding feast
And christening cakes - all filled with
Flavours and with memories.

And then the gift of touch
A mother’s soft caress received and given
The gentle touch of husband when alone
The touch of eyes, across a crowded room,
The reaching for a friend,
The velvet of a rose petal and
The lick of a loving dog - all say
I love you - the touch of letters
Sent across the miles when actual touch
Cannot be expressed and yet
The need is there.

At dawn I wake to praise You, Lord
Together with the songs of praise
Chorused ecstatically by the humble birds.
My soul thrills at the glory
Of a symphony, the laughter
Of a child, the cry of a new born baby.
The voice that says I love you,
The words read from the Bible,
And also at the sound of Your dear voice
That still small voice of calm
Which is not so much a gift of hearing
As of listening.

About Mandy Hackland

My love in life is to encourage others to deepen their relationship with God. I write devotional material, stories and small group studies with that in mind. I live in South Africa and also love spending time in the bush, bird watching and walking. I have moved to the coast and am enjoying the green spaces and beautiful vistas that surround me, reminding me of God's grace every day.
