Jesus went to spend time with some friends. The two sisters are mentioned in this story. Martha, who was rushing around preparing a meal for her visitors; and Mary who sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to Him as He talked. Martha was fed up. She had been left to do all the work! So she complained to Jesus. His reply may have surprised her.
‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed – or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.’ Luke 10:41-42
Today you are invited to consider which of the two sisters resonates most with you. Would you be the one preparing the meal, or the one sitting at Jesus’ feet? How does His response make you feel? What would you have said to Him in reply? Imagine for a moment being the other sister. How would your response to His words have changed? What is Jesus saying to you today through these words. Tell Him about any struggles you may have. Listen for His reply to you.
May God bless you with understanding and an awareness of other people’s reactions and responses to Jesus in your lives.
