Jesus was teaching in the temple when the religious leaders asked Him what authority He was teaching by. He did not answer their question but asked them another. When they could not answer Him, He continued with His response. He said

I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism – was it from heaven, or of human origin?…. Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. Luke 20:6, 8

Today you are invited to consider why Jesus answered in this way. Why wouldn’t He tell them? Was it because there had been a great deal of teaching in this regard already? Was it because they would not believe Him anyway? Could it have been because they would not answer His own question honestly? Or because they were trying to trap Him? Jesus cannot be fooled. Whatever the reason, what do these words mean for you today? How would you have responded to this conversation? Ask Jesus for clarification as to their personal meaning for you today. What does He reply and how do you respond?
