Peace of Mind

In a busy time of my life I wrote this poem.  Reading Scripture was a task I did every day.  But I did it so quickly without thinking about what I was reading that it just became something on my ‘to do’ list.  I was restless, worried, too busy.  And then, in a rare quiet moment this poem came to me.  Perhaps it will speak to you today.

Peace of Mind

So many people today seem to find

They struggle with life, they have no peace of mind

They read through the Gospels, but just like a book

They skim every page and take no time to look

For the meaning that’s hidden behind every word;

They’re in such a hurry, it’s never occurred

To them that there may be a message be-masked

Just waiting for them, if only they asked.

For John, it was different – he met the Man

Who called Himself Jesus – he was quie a fan

Of His really – their friendship became very firm

It was not very long before John was to learn

That Jesus, the Man, was the Son of God too.

He performed miracles, no mere man could do,

And He showed such love to John and his friends

As a shepherd does, when the young lambs he tends.

He spent three years with Jesus, hearing Him teach

And watching Him heal – He gave the mute speech,

The deaf they could hear and the blind they could see;

He mended their hearts, for forgiveness was free.

And one evening they sat round the table to eat;

The Master served them – and washed all their feet.

He gave them some bread and He share with them wine

He told them that what was to happen was fine.

But what was to happen was painful and sore

The beatings He had, the thorns that He wore

The nails that they used, the cross where He hung

And Satan crowed loud for he thought he had won.

While John and the others all watched as in pain

For they did not realise their grief was in vain.

For Jesus, the Son of God, died for our sinning –

For everyone else on earth – here’s the beginning!

Jesus, the Son of God, rose from the grave

Rolled back the stone and came forth from the cave;

Triumphant o’er death, He arose and became

All things to all men in His own Father’s name.

He is here, there and everywhere all at one time

He is Saviour, He’s friend, He is Lord of my rhyme

He is deep here inside me, and you too, you know,

You just have to find out which way you should go.

Confess all your sins and repent of them too

Ask Jesus to be a real friend to you.

Tell Him you’ll follow Him where’er He leads

And ask Him to teach you – and you’ll see the seeds

Of your faith grow up strong and bear fruit too you’ll find

As you lead a life now with true peace of mind.

Following Jesus each day that you live

And giving of self, as with Him you can give.

Then you will see Jesus in others, like Joh,

Jesus Incarnate will help you go on.

In the smile of a child or a beggar or tramp

As you reach out to them and you are their lamp

That lighs up the world showing others its true

That Jesus lives on and He’s living in you.

So, when they search the Scriptures in turn they will find

A new way of life, and a new peace of mind.
