I believe that the poetry and prose I write is a gift from God. I pray that it touches each person who reads it with a new and bright understanding of God’s love for them. Sometimes, in order for the poems to rhyme, the word order is a little strange – which is one of the reasons I do not write as much rhyming poetry as I used to. Today I prefer blank verse. But here, in the early days of my life as a poet, I express my thanks to God for that gift in rhyme. Your gift may not be writing poetry – but whatever it is I pray that this poem will refresh your eagerness to return it to God and use it for His glory.
Gifts
Lord God Your gifts are many
that You have given me;
I think the best of any
is the gift of poetry.
Lord God to you I give it,
this gift to make a rhyme
And pray that You will use it
through me at any time.
But when I think of how You gave
Yourself to all mankind
And how You died our souls to save
Yes, even mine I find,
Lord God, my soul I give to You
to do with as You will
My body is Your temple too;
may I Your call fulfil
Lord God, You work so hard for me
in every time of strife
Through You came life forever free,
forever, lasting life.
What can I give You in return
but my whole life on earth?
My spirit does inside me burn
to serve You from my birth.
Lord God, Your love shines down on me
like light rays from the sun
It pours itself so lavishly;
it’s glory’s never done.
Lord God, how can I love You so
when my love is so weak?
And yet, today, I’ve come to know
my company You seek.
Lord God the gifts You’ve given me
with love are freely given
Each day I use them I will see
I’m that much nearer Heaven.
Amen
